Our social evening was held on Tuesday
22nd June 2010 at 77 Moorland Road (my house). It proved to
be just as popular when we welcomed 22 members and 5 guests. We had a
beautiful evening and most people sat out in the garden. We started the
evening with Pimms followed by an absolutely brilliant buffet which was
a Jacob's Join. So much Food and such a variety!! Marjorie was our
photographer for the evening and you can view our pictures on the MU
notice board in church.
On Tuesday 13th July 2010 a
coach of members and guests travelled to Trentham Gardens. The weather
was fine but rather cool for a July day! We arrived about 10.45am when
most people had a coffee break. Some went to look around the Italian
Gardens and a walk around the lake. Others enjoyed the small unique
shops where there were plenty of places for lunch if required. The large
garden centre was also worth a visit and also housed a restaurant and
coffee shop!
The day stayed fine but as we began our
journey home at 4.30pm it begin to rain. Weren't we lucky? Everyone
arrived back on the coach with bags and said they had run out of time to
see everything so perhaps one day, another visit will be planned!! I
thank Audrey & Betty for organising a super day out!
It is with very great sadness that I
have to inform you of the passing of one of our much loved Indoor
Members. Mrs Lily Geldard was taken into God's keeping. Her funeral was
on Thursday 29th July at St. Leonards, the church was packed
and it was a very fitting tribute to Lily and her family that so many
people turned out to celebrate Lily's wonderful life and support the
family.
She always had a smile for everyone and
was such a lovely person to be around. Unfortunately, her quality of
life was not what it was, although I still remember with fondness her
joining us for our Christmas lunch in December.
Lily thought the world of her family and
she was an inspiration for the Mother's Union as she lived by all our
standards. God Bless, Lily, job well done! I send, on your behalf, our
sincere thoughts and blessings to all the family.
Finally, Kathy Pennington will be
collecting orders for diaries and calendars for 2011 at the September
meeting.
With love and blessings

Dear Everyone in the St Leonard’s
Community!
Year 3 are writing to say thank you to
all the members of our community who came along to our ‘Walk in the
Woods’ on Thursday 24th of June in the afternoon. This was to celebrate
our wonderful woodland and to share the activities each class had been
doing connected with the woods. The ‘Walk in the Woods’ was officially
opened by our Mayor, Lois Rimmer. Her sons used to come to our school
and she remembered that the woodland area was ‘out of bounds’ at that
time.
The vicar of St. Leonard’s, Langho, Revd
David Noblet began with a prayer then Mrs Pickup spoke to everyone to
thank them for making the day so special. The children along with the
parents and visitors were sitting on our school field by the big tree
listening to the opening ceremony.
Mrs Pickup then invited everyone to walk
in the woodland. Refreshments were available from the school garden. In
the woodland there were lots of activities for visitors to take part in
including a leaf identification trail, a minibeast hunt, a sculpture
trail and a reflection walk.
Year 2 had a Viking day and they were
acting as Viking invaders, all dressed up weaving, cooking and telling
us about different Viking names. Reception/ Year 1 made bamboo
instruments and sang a song called ‘B-U-G’! They were dancing and
singing
Year 3 had made some spider webs from
natural materials and they hoped that people would spot all five spider
webs and their pine cone spiders! Some of the spiders were at head
height, hiding in the trees.
Year 1 invited everyone to sit and read
their prayers on the prayer tree. People were then invited to write
their own prayer on a leaf and then hang it on the tree. Year 1 had
made a natural cross on the ground from stones, pebbles and sand.
Year 4 had enjoyed making willow
sculptures with the Creative Partnership’s artist, Julie Miles. A willow
stream, willow tepees and bird nests were also there for us to see. Year
4 recited a poem called ‘The Birds’ and jumped out as people walked by.
Year 6 had made settings from The
Gruffalo including a Gruffalo den, an owl house, a fox tunnel and snake
logs. They read the story to the Reception children.
Year 5 enjoyed designing and making a
beautiful decorative wall hanging which was seen by the many visitors to
their classroom.
In the school hall a Winter project was
on display showing poetry reading and photographs taken by the Year 5
and 6 children in the woodland earlier this year.
We would like to say thank you for all
the wonderful comments people gave us at the end of the day. Our Mayor,
Lois Rimmer told us that it was ‘absolutely fabulous! I would like to
come back to school – it wasn’t this good in my day!’ The visiting
author Antony Lishak said ‘ The happiest school in the country, with the
bubbliest staff in the world!’
Parents told us ‘You should be very
proud of yourselves! Your school is fantastic, what a lot of learning is
going on at St Leonard’s Primary School!’ and ‘Well done – what a
wonderful inspiring day!’
Thank you to everyone involved with this
very successful event!

16th
August 2010
Hello again to all our dear friends at
Billington and Langho
Dear all,
Please forgive me for writing to you all
so early this year but we are really tremendously busy here at Santaland,
do you know that some shops on England are already stocking up on
presents? orders are flooding into our workshops and the Craftsmen (and
Crafts ladies) are working round the clock to fulfill all these orders.
So much so that I thought I should check with you to remind you that we
are expected at your Christmas Fayre on the 20th November,
which I know Father Christmas is so looking forward to, and we want to
make sure that there will be lots of children for him to see and lots of
fun and excitement at the Fayre (I know there usually is!).
So don’t forget, see you all on the 20st
of November
Lots of love from all here, and
especially me
Trudy
Tenderfoot
Chief Gofa in Chief (yes I have been
promoted – isn’t it exciting?).
PS. We are already having a snow wave
here in Santaland and the “experts” say that it will continue until well
after Christmas – but we won’t let that put us off coming will it?
PCC

CLEANING CHURCH
We are
extremely fortunate here at St. Leonard’s Church to have a very loyal
and hard working band from the congregation who are on a rota to clean
our Church so that when you come in to worship on Sunday morning the
Church is clean and the PCC would like to take this opportunity to thank
all those helpers.
However we would like to ask the volunteers to ensure that they take
any rubbish collected from the waste paper baskets to take it home with
them and dispose it in the normal household way. The reason for asking
for this further favour is so that we do not fill the waste bin at the
back of Church with rubbish which can be disposed of in a different way.
Many
thanks for your co-operation and your efforts in keeping our Church
looking beautiful.
